Healthy Almond Energy Balls (Easy 5-Ingredients Snack)

Florencia Baldini Florencia Baldini Last Updated on June 9, 2026

I used to buy healthy snack bars and energy balls from the supermarket every week, but honestly, they can be expensive and often contain ingredients I wouldn’t normally use at home. These days, I make a batch of these Almond Energy Balls instead.

They take just 10 minutes from start to finish, cost a fraction of the price, and are packed with nutrition from simple ingredients like dates, oats, chia seeds, almond butter and dark chocolate.

I keep a batch in the fridge all week for those moments when I need a quick energy boost, something sweet after dinner, or a healthy snack between meals. They’re soft, chewy, naturally sweet, and taste like a treat while delivering fibre, healthy fats and slow-release energy.

If you’re looking for an easy homemade snack that tastes great and makes you feel good too, these Almond Energy Balls are hard to beat.

Why You’ll Love These Almond Energy Balls

  • No baking required
  • Made with simple pantry ingredients
  • Naturally sweetened with dates
  • Rich in fibre
  • Great for meal prep
  • Perfect grab-and-go snack
  • Naturally gluten-free if using certified gluten-free oats
  • Ready in under 10 minutes

Why These Are Good For You

Unlike many snack bars and energy bites sold in supermarkets, these Almond Energy Balls are made from real food ingredients that provide lasting energy.

Medjool Dates

Dates provide natural sweetness while also containing fibre, potassium and antioxidants. They help bind the mixture together without needing refined sugar or syrups.

Almond Butter

Almond butter adds healthy fats, vitamin E and plant-based protein, helping make these balls satisfying and filling.

Oats

Oats are a fantastic source of fibre and slow-release carbohydrates, helping keep energy levels steady throughout the day.

Chia Seeds

These tiny seeds are packed with fibre, omega-3 fats and important minerals.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate adds rich flavour and antioxidants while keeping the recipe feeling like a treat.

Why Homemade Is Better Than Store-Bought

Many supermarket energy balls may look healthy, but often contain added sugars, syrups, preservatives, flavourings and surprisingly high price tags.

Making your own means:

  • You know exactly what’s inside
  • No unnecessary additives
  • Less sugar than many packaged alternatives
  • More fibre
  • More affordable per serving
  • Easy to customise to your taste

Plus, they taste fresher and have a much softer texture than most shop-bought versions.

Tips & Hacks

  • Use soft Medjool dates for the best texture.
  • If your dates are dry, soak them in hot water for 10 minutes first.
  • Chill the mixture before rolling if it feels sticky.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt to make the chocolate flavour pop.
  • Double the batch and freeze half for later.

Swaps

  • Swap almond butter for peanut butter or cashew butter.
  • Use cacao nibs instead of dark chocolate.
  • Add 1 tbsp cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavour.
  • Mix in chopped nuts for extra crunch.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder for an extra protein boost.

Storage

Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 5-7 days.

Freezer: Freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost for 10-15 minutes before eating.
