Upside Down Apple Danish

If you’re after a last-minute dessert that looks impressive but couldn’t be easier, these upside down apple danishes are a game-changer. They’re made with just 6 simple ingredients and come out of the oven looking (and tasting) like something from a bakery. The top gets beautifully caramelised thanks to the honey and cinnamon, while the bottom is golden, flaky puff pastry.

This is the kind of sweet treat that feels perfect for autumn and winter—but honestly, I’d eat these any time of year. They’re warm, cosy, and made with real apple slices, so I like to think they count as slightly healthier too… right? Either way, they’re so easy to make, you’ll probably be whipping them up on repeat.

Why Is Upside-Down Baking So Popular

Upside-down baking has become a popular trend because it delivers impressive results with minimal effort. The method involves layering ingredients like fruit, sweeteners, or sauces on the bottom of the baking tray and covering them with pastry or batter—so when you flip it over, you get a beautiful, caramelised top without any extra decorating.

It’s loved for its rustic charm, versatility, and the way it intensifies flavour—like the honey and cinnamon in these apple danishes that soak into the fruit as they bake. Plus, the reveal moment is always satisfying! Whether you’re using apples, pears, or even savoury toppings like tomatoes and cheese, upside-down baking is a foolproof way to make simple ingredients shine.

Perfect For

These mini apple danishes are perfect for autumn gatherings, festive mornings, or when you need a quick yet impressive dessert. They work beautifully as an after-dinner treat, a cosy weekend bake, or even as a sweet addition to a brunch table. Because they’re made with just a handful of ingredients and ready in under 20 minutes, they’re ideal for those last-minute moments when you want something warm, flaky, and delicious straight from the oven.

Tips

  • Use baking paper: This will stop the honey from sticking and burning on your tray.
  • Seal well with a fork: This stops the filling from leaking out.
  • Let them cool before flipping: They’ll hold together better and won’t burn your fingers.
