What Is Tofu & Why You Should Give It A Try
Tofu is a plant-based protein made by curdling soy milk and pressing it into blocks. It’s a staple in many cuisines and is becoming a popular choice for anyone wanting to eat healthier and add more variety to their meals. From a nutrition point of view, tofu is packed with high-quality protein, containing all the essential amino acids your body needs. It’s also rich in iron, calcium (especially if fortified), and low in calories and cholesterol — making it great for heart health and muscle support. What I love about tofu is how versatile it is. It soaks up flavours easily, which means you can use it in everything from creamy spreads and smoothies to stir-fries, salads, and even desserts. You can enjoy it silky and smooth or firm and chewy — whatever your recipe calls for.
And here’s the best part — you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy tofu. Adding it to your meals is a simple way to boost protein, eat more plant-based foods, and keep your diet interesting. It’s all about balance and finding new, tasty ingredients that nourish your body and taste buds. If you’re curious about adding tofu to your kitchen staples, start simple and experiment — you might just fall in love with this nutritious, adaptable ingredient!
Tips
- Use extra firm tofu: It blends into the creamiest texture without excess water so it is the best option for this vegan cream cheese alternative. I’ve tried using silken tofu, but I don’t recommend it since it’s less easy to spread compared to extra firm tofu.”
- Nutritional yeast: Adds that cheesy flavour and B vitamins, a great vegan staple. If you are not vegan try Parmesan cheese for extra flavour!
- Mustard powder: Gives a gentle tang and depth without overpowering the tofu. You can also swap with dijon mustard.
- Make ahead: This spread keeps well in the fridge for a few day, so you can prep it for the week.
Swaps
Extra firm tofu: Silken tofu can be used although I dont recommend because it results in a softer, less spreadable texture.
Milk: Any plant-based milk such as almond, oat, or cashew milk works well.
Nutritional yeast: You can omit it, but it adds a cheesy flavor. Alternatively, use vegan cheese or if you are not vegan try adding grated Parmesan cheese.
Mustard powder: Use English or Dijon mustard if you don’t have mustard powder.
Chives: Substitute with green onions, parsley, or dill for a different herb flavor.
Storage
Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days. Stir before serving if it separates slightly.
Freezer: Not recommended to freeze, as the texture may change and become watery upon thawing.
