Tips
- Use Ripe Pears: Choose pears that are slightly soft to the touch but not mushy. Ripe pears provide the best flavour and texture for this dish.
- Pierce the pear flesh gently with a toothpick before drizzling the coconut oil — this helps the flavour soak in better and keeps the fruit moist.
- Add a Spice Kick: Incorporate a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger to the pear filling for extra depth of flavour. It gives a warm, aromatic touch.
- Sweetness Level: Pears naturally have sweetness, so you can adjust the amount of sugar in the filling depending on your preference for sweetness.
- Serving Ideas: Serve the crumble warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a dollop of Greek yoghurt. It adds a creamy balance to the warm, fruity filling.
Swaps
Pear: Apple or peach – firm fruits that hold their shape work best.
Coconut oil: Olive oil or butter – use what you have or prefer.
Oats: Crushed nuts or spelt flakes – for a grain-free or different texture.
Coconut: Ground almonds or chopped nuts – adds flavour and crunch.
Honey: Maple syrup or date syrup – works just as well for sweetness.
Almond butter: Peanut butter or tahini – adjust based on taste or allergy needs.
Storage
Fridge: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven to crisp up the crumble before serving.
Freezer: Not ideal for freezing, as the pear may become mushy and the crumble lose its texture once thawed.
