Healthy Apple Doughnuts

These healthy apple doughnuts are the perfect way to start your day, all while keeping things simple and nutritious. While doughnuts are typically considered a treat or dessert, I love creating healthier versions of classic recipes so you can indulge without any guilt—especially when it comes to breakfast! Made with wholesome ingredients like oat flour, fresh apples, and a touch of cinnamon, these doughnuts are light, naturally sweetened, and incredibly satisfying.

The best part? You don’t need any special equipment or skills—just a doughnut mould, a few simple ingredients, and about 12 minutes in the oven. They’re as easy as they are delicious. Plus, these doughnuts are versatile: enjoy them as a breakfast option that’s rich in fibre and nutrients or as a sweet yet wholesome snack anytime during the day.

For a little extra indulgence, brush the tops with coconut oil and sprinkle a cinnamon-sugar mix on top once they’re out of the oven. It’s the perfect way to add a touch of sweetness without going overboard. So go ahead and enjoy these wholesome doughnuts with your morning coffee, or pack them as an on-the-go snack.

Why Wholesome And Homemade Is Better?

Making a wholesome doughnut is a win-win – not only is it better for your body, but it’s also a fun way to treat yourself without the guilt. When you swap out refined sugars and processed ingredients for wholesome options like oat flour, apples, and cinnamon, you’re getting a doughnut that’s packed with nutrients, fiber, and natural sweetness. These healthier versions give you all the indulgence of a classic doughnut, but with added benefits for your health, such as sustained energy, better digestion, and less sugar crash.

What’s also great about making wholesome doughnuts is the fun and creative process. You get to experiment with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and you can feel good knowing that each bite is nourishing. Plus, it’s so much more rewarding to make something from scratch that you can feel good about – it’s a little act of self-care! Whether you enjoy them for breakfast, as a snack, or as a light dessert, these healthier doughnuts can fit into your day while still satisfying those sweet cravings in a more balanced way.

Tips

  • Apple Purée: Make sure to microwave the apples for a minute to soften them before blending. This helps them break down into a smooth purée and ensures your doughnuts have a nice, tender texture.
  • Consistent Texture: Mix the ingredients until everything is fully combined to ensure a smooth, homogeneous batter. This will help the doughnuts bake evenly.
  • Don’t Skip the Topping: For that perfect sweet, cinnamon kick, brush the tops with a little melted coconut oil before adding the cinnamon-sugar mix. It helps the sugar stick, making every bite deliciously sweet and flavorful.
  • Baking Time: Keep an eye on the doughnuts in the oven. Bake for about 12 minutes at 180°C, and use a toothpick to check if they’re done. If it comes out clean, they’re ready!

Swaps

Maple Syrup: If you prefer, swap maple syrup with honey or agave syrup.

Notes

Optional but really recommend it: if you want to make these doughnuts really special add a mix of sugar and cinnamon on top, to do this you’ll need to brush the top of the doughnuts with oil (I have used melted coconut oil ~ 1 tsp).
This way the cinnamon and sugar mixture will stick onto it.
