Can you imagine having breakfast with chocolate waffles? With my healthy and easy version you can! With just six wholesome ingredients, this recipe comes together in minutes, making it perfect for busy mornings or a weekend treat.
The combination of ripe banana, rich cacao powder, and a touch of maple syrup creates a naturally sweet and chocolatey batter that feels indulgent but keeps things light and nutritious. Cooked to perfection in a waffle maker, these waffles are soft, satisfying, and perfect with your favourite toppings. I enjoyed mine with creamy yoghurt, a drizzle of melted chocolate, and a sprinkle of chopped hazelnuts. Every bite was pure perfection!

Toopping Ideas
Greek yoghurt or coconut yoghurt – for creaminess and a protein boost
Fresh berries or banana slices – to add natural sweetness and fibre
Drizzle of nut butter or tahini – for healthy fats and extra richness
Chopped nuts or seeds – for crunch and minerals
A square of dark chocolate or cacao nibs – to keep it indulgent but wholesome
Tips
- Don’t overmix the batter – just stir until the ingredients are combined.
- Preheat and grease your waffle maker – this helps avoid sticking and ensures even cooking.
- Wait until the waffle lifts easily – that’s how you know it’s ready and nicely crisped.
- Double the batch if you want leftovers – they freeze well and can be reheated in the toaster.
Swaps
Banana: I haven’t tried any variation for this recipe but mashed sweet potato or applesauce should work for a different base, texture and flavour.
Oat flour: Sub with almond flour or plain flour, though texture may vary slightly.
Maple syrup: Use honey or date syrup for a similar natural sweetness.
Egg: Replace with a flax egg (1 tbsp flaxseed + 3 tbsp water) for a vegan version.
Hazelnuts (topping): Use chopped almonds, pecans or leave them out if preferred.
Storage
Fridge: These are best enjoyed fresh, but you can refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in the toaster or oven for best texture.
